'The Braid Up': How to Create Our Favorite Loc Styles

The best of the best of 2022, right this way.

Locs are an absolutely GOAT protective style, and no one can argue that, right? People have been treading their hair as a low-maintenance way to keep it cute and styled since ancient eras, and loc versatility has def evolved. Up, down, in a bun, twisted around, they're a vibe every which way possible. And you don’t even have to commit to the long haul (like several years long) ones anymore. We’re officially in an era where you can get the same look with spot-on extensions, you know?

So whether you're working with locs from a pack or from your natural hair, there are so many cool ways you can wear them. That's why we narrowed down the best of the best, all featured on The Braid Up over the years. Stylist Sherelle Holder is the hair expert who whipped up these gorgeous styles, so pls blame her when you become obsessed with the loc look. Check ‘em out!

Wanna know how to make these styles look absolutely flawless? Check out these helpful maintenance tips!

1. The wrapping method is great for faux locs. First your natural hair is braided, and then extensions are wrapped around each braid to mimic the look of locs. I love a hair hack.

2. Use a curl cream when re-twisting. After a while, your locs will start to look a bit worn in. Freshen them up by using a moisturizing and light-hold curl cream to boost hydration while also adding definition.

3. Maintain a regular wash routine. If you've loc'd up your real hair, make sure you're still hitting your scalp with shampoo every couple of weeks to minimize scalp irritation and keep your roots happy. Make sure to gently blow-dry on low heat afterward.

4. For some added moisture, keep it lightweight. Product buildup and locs are not an ideal mix. Try out a lightweight leave-in conditioner to help hydrate this style with no fuss.
